Teaching Primary Science Outdoors - a course run by Helen Spring

The CPD will include:

  • Characteristics of effective outdoor learning.
  • Managing children in an outdoor setting.
  • A discussion about health and safety in the outdoor setting.
  • Making links between Working Scientifically curriculum objectives and Outdoor Learning.
  • Exploring how Subject Knowledge curriculum objectives can be taught in the outdoor setting.
  • Exploring assessment in the outdoor setting
  • The course cost includes a copy of 'Teaching Primary Science Outdoors' by Helen Spring

This course would suit: the science lead, forest schools lead, outdoor learning lead or anyone who teaches primary science.

About the course leader:

Helen Spring is a Primary Science and Outdoor Learning consultant. She set up her business, ‘Spring Learning’, in 2015. Prior to this, Helen was a Professional Development Leader at the National STEM Centre, a teacher and science subject leader, and an environmental education officer. Helen currently leads networks for primary science subject leaders in a number of locations, outdoor learning workshops for pupils and primary science CPD through STEM, SEERIH and PSQM. She also heads up the education programme at Howsham Mill. Helen is the author of ‘Teaching Primary Science Outdoors’ and the Reviews Editor for the ASE’s Primary Science journal. She also sits on the ASE Primary Science Committee, holds CSciTeach and the STEM CPD Lead Facilitator mark.

Be aware that the car park is approximately 10 minutes walk from the venue itself.

Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch with you - please note that there is no shop nearby.
